Karate Is Like Fishing...Or Not

There is an old saying: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” There is a lot of truth there. But, in some instances, there is another dimension to that ideal. While there is nothing inherently immoral or evil about the act of fishing itself, even this could have morality questions if taken to an extreme. Now, what, I wonder, could this have to do with the subject of traditional karate training? You got it… the moral issues (I’m avoiding the legal self-defense /use of force thing today) surrounding the real-world use of the art we have trained so hard to perfect.
