A good post over on Mokuren Dojo Blog on Pummeling and why it is important as a basic skill. Pummelling is an essential skill to learn as a martial artist. If you don’t know how to pummel, you really don’t know how to fight in my opinion. Pummelling is building block for so many things in our Martial training. In aikido it is commonly said all techniques are Ikkyo. I did not really understand this for many years. One day doing pummelling for about 30 minutes in a MMA class I figured it out! Pummelling is ikkyo! Pummelling is Ikkyo, because it is about controlling the “upper cross” of the body. The upper cross is the intersection of the spine and the shoulders. This is a key point in controlling someones core. Another key control point is the head. We can access the spine through the head as well, however, most of the time in a fight it is better to control the upper cross of the body, especially when we are dealing with the potential of weapons. Pummelling also serves as a good mechanism to teach basic principles of control. I have found it a wonderful “macro” or “gross motor” movement exercise to get students to understand how the body works and moves. It builds an excellent martial foundation to develop internal skills that are commonly taught in arts like aikido (ikkyo) and Tai Chi (Push hands).
